Greater Mt. Sinai M.B.C. of Compton Church History

GMS was founded and organized in the home of Rev. Claude Ellis in the City of Pacoima, California on April 26, 1958 by Rev. George Devrouax with five chartered members: Rev. George Devrouax, First Lady Carolyn Devrouax, Rev. Claude Ellis, Myrtice Ellis and Rev. Henry Cain.  Several months later, the Church moved to 1022 East 82nd Street in the City of Los Angeles, California and given the name Greater Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church, Number 2.  GMS moved to its current location at 12317 S. Wilmington Blvd., Compton, California on February 10, 1962.

May 22, 1977 was a monumental day as the Church celebrated Homecoming and the Laying of the Cornerstone.  In this year GMS installed a central heating and cooling system at a cost of $4,450, also installed wall paneling, painted the kitchen, and obtained fire insurance.  By year-end, the Church had no indebtedness; everything at the Church including the building had been paid for in full.  In December of 1981, due to his declining health, Pastor Devrouax requested to be relieved of active pastoral duties.  Rev. Stanley was unanimously approved to serve as the Pastor on a one-year trial basis.

In 1985, Rev. Curly Boyce served as the Acting Pastor for approximately two years.  In 1987 Richard J. Bradley was elected as pastor.  Pastor Bradley served as pastor of GMS from 1987-1994.  Pastor Bradley organized a strong Young Adult Department and began actively teaching discipleship. During Bradley’s tenure, GMS became active in the California State Missionary Baptist Convention, and the National Baptist Convention.

In 1991, Rev. Kalvin Eugene Cressel was ordained, examined to preach, and tasked to be a helper of Dr. Richard James Bradley.   This year GMS finalized its building process as the floor plans were designed.

Rev. Kalvin Eugene Cressel, Sr. was elected pastor of Greater Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church #2, at the April 17, 1995 church meeting.  Rev. Cressel officially took over the pastoral duties on April 23, 1995.  He was installed as pastor on May 28, 1995.

Pastor Kalvin E. Cressel is a true Pastor/Teacher; a shepherd/leader able to nurture, teach, and care for the spiritual needs of the body.  Pastor Cressel, is a very unique person who reaches the heart of the seniors as well as the youngest members in our church.
